Media Gateway Achieves 99.99995% Availability for Core System Hardware
Based on Telcordia™ System Reliability Analysis
ICS2000 Exceeds Carrier-Grade Availability Standards for Total
System Reliability
LOWELL, Mass., December 3, 2002 – Convergent
Networks, a leading provider of broadband voice infrastructure solutions
for cable providers and competitive carriers, announced today its
ICS2000 media gateway has successfully completed a Telcordia Technologies,
Inc. System Reliability Analysis with estimated results of 99.99995%
availability for core system hardware. The ICS2000 exceeded the
typical industry availability goal of five-nines for carrier-class
telephony equipment and demonstrated that all stable calls were
preserved upon fail-over of any hardware element.
The scope of the reliability analysis included rigorous fault insertion
testing that validated hardware redundancy, software detection and
recovery capabilities, and board-level failure-over rates on an
ICS2000 media gateway. Based on the test results, the estimated
core system hardware downtime for the ICS2000 is 0.22 minutes per
year, which exceeds the Telcordia GR-1110-CORE requirement of 0.4
minutes per year for hardware downtime. Further, the estimated hardware
downtime per individual interface port on the ICS2000 is four minutes
per year or less, which exceeds the GR-1110-CORE requirement of
12 minutes per year for hardware caused failures.
“Reliability is a key design requirement for cable operators
and competitive carriers who are entering the voice market,”
said Mike Dagenais, vice president of Engineering, Convergent Networks.
“Meeting this reliability standard reinforces the high-performance
capabilities of the ICS2000 media gateway and validates that our
solution can withstand the demands of carrier-class voice networks.”
An integral component of Convergent Networks’ product
family, the ICS2000 media gateway was designed to exceed Telcordia
requirements for availability, providing a carrier-grade platform
for robust and reliable service delivery. The fully redundant solution
supports rapid, automated fail-over of all components with preservation
of calls and non-service interrupting software upgrades. Implemented
from the ground up for carrier-class availability, these capabilities
are available in the product today.
“Network downtime is one of the most critical and costly
business aspects that carriers have to deal with on a regular basis,”
said Françoise Sandroff, executive director of the Network
Reliability Department at Telcordia Technologies. “Here at
Telcordia, we strive to help vendors enhance the quality and reliability
of their products by providing test environments that assess conformance
to carrier-class reliability requirements. Convergent Networks has
exceeded these requirements by attaining better than five-nines
availability.”
Convergent Networks has been shipping its carrier-class product line since early
2000 and has established itself as the leading platform in deployed traffic per month
among next-generation
vendors. The company’s customers are currently carrying more
than three billion minutes of billable traffic per month on its
platform.
